Thanks for the tips, I have been job hunting for the past year, maybe I have made some of the errors you mentioned. But I need to ask what is your views on changing career for example from accounting to Human Resource manager

Hi Liz,

Thanks for commenting.

When I wrote this I wasn't thinking about the inequalities between our education system and that of other countries. In fact I think there's need for change in the education systems of other countries as well.

What I really wanted to highlight is that while the industrial age has long passed, the education system that was built for it still lives on.

The arts are not treated as equals to the sciences and the students' individual differences are not considered. This puts our children at a disadvantage in the global world where what is needed is persons who are good at both the sciences and the arts, persons who can make good use of both the left and the right sides of their brains.

I notice this column is a bit old, but I had to comment. As I read your every word, I am in amazement, as I sit here with the exact same thoughts as you have. I can't believe that after spending so much money (most parents) don't have and taking student loans to go to college, you end up with (NOTHING!!!!!). I say this to say that studying in the Caribbean seem to be a waste of time as our Education system is deemed "3rd WORLD". If you travel to a "first world" country and try to get a job you are told to get your transcript evaluated by paying over US$100, then you wait patiently to hear the verdict on how many years you have to spend re-studying. "What the hell is our education worth!!!!??" You can be a doctor for years and once you migrate you are studying all over again.

When I was younger, I used to comment that our politicians and upperclass citizens send their children to schools in the US, UK, Canada & you name it...while the less fortunate struggle to get assistance from Student Loan Bureau-feeling lucky if they say you are granted the loan - with a debt to pay before you even get a job..... Now I know why they send their kids abroad. If only the rest of us knew... and we wonder why they end up with the best jobs when they return and always progress...leaving those who did work equally hard or even harder to get an education.

We now have the answer....they are 1st WORLD educated.... and no matter where they decide to live... thats how they will be viewed.... but what about the rest of us????

The Caribbean now need to focus on getting the relevant levels of certification required to put our people on the map... after attending school for so many years for a college degree..you are denied a good job in your own damn country let alone another..... they are quick to accept someone who say they studied overseas....

ITS DEFINITELY TIME FOR SOME THINGS TO CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!

I can relate to the story you illustrated above. When I was growing up, there was little boy whom everyone claimed was hyperactive and rude. He would interrupt the pastor in his sermons to seek clarification or make a comment to the amusement of some in the congregation and the disgust of others who thought he was rude.
He went to high school and a friend of mine who went to university with me, became one of his subject teachers. Everyone in school as usual knew him as a trouble maker. He would climb up and take down the largest books in the library and he and the books would tumble to the ground. My friend however, quickly came to the conclusion that he was hyperactive because he assimilated information much more quickly than his peers and so he became bored rather quickly while his peers tried to catch up. She recommended that he be put in a higher class with older children. Voila! He was now with his intellectual peers and actually calmed down quite a bit. He went overseas to study and I have not been able to find out what happened to him.
Were he living in these times though, someone would have recommended that he be put on medication and his brain cells would have been destroyed!

Hi,

Wow great jobs on the statistics. Love the graphical representations of the figures. Keep up the good work, These trends help people to know when the market is good to start searching or when is a good time to make those follow up phone calls for cv sent out in the past.

When you performed that search you basically told the engine "the results have to contain jamaica. so that becomes first priority. Then next in priority is the word "information" then "technology" .

To provide a better search we've added a tool which can be seen below the search box.

By including two plus signs ie. searching "information ++technology" and Jamaica you tell the engine technology and Jamaica must be present thus better results.

Try it let me know how it works out for you.

Hey thanx for the recognition much appreciated...mi LARGE lol.

i was on the site lastnight testing out the new search. i realized one thing though. i did a search for Information Technology and Jamaica and i actually saw results from non IT categories like accountant, electrician, psychologist just to name a few. it seems as if search is only listing jobs from jamaica and not narrowing down the list to those in the IT category.
